Picasso et les contemporains

Picasso et les contemporains

Picasso and Contemporary artists - Eloge de la fabrique (In praise of craftsmanship) 23 June to 31 October.

As part of the "Picasso Méditerranée "project, the museum will presenting a selection of sculptures by Pablo Picasso as being the fountainhead  and springboard of contemporary creative techniques.  Executed around the early 1960s using small sheets of metal, bits of wood, sheets of paper or cardboard all put together, folded, cut up and improvised with that commanding genius for which the artist was so well known, these works display such a freshness of vision and genuine plasticity that we must ask if these have not been a trigger for contemporary art, and in consequence, what has been their impact on contemporary artists.
Synthesising painting, drawing and sculpture these works seem to invent a new and composite dimension light-hearted, childlike, immediate, where the interplay of mass and void, flat-line and curve cause new shapes to appear and disappear. Here we see cheap and commonplace materials transformed into gems of expression. The exhibition will be a genuine revelation for many artists who will unwittingly be paying “homage to Picasso".
